While writing the roadbook, Robert Kubica had a unfortunate accident in his Recce Volvo S60. He crashed into a oncoming car and damaged the Volvos rear, which lead to AWD failure. Kubica had to switch from the modified S60 to a bone stock car, which had trouble making it through the tough stages. The suspension simply wasn't up to it, and on the last 40km, power steering failed as well.

Not a good start for Kubica.

That's not a good start at all, usually there is a duplicate backup car, that is modified, am I right?

Im a bit of a rally noob, so is recce day when the drivers drive the course in their own cars to learn the course and make notes?

It is the day(s) before the main rally where they are allowed to drive the stages twice in limited speed (80kph maximum I believe), and only in production cars with slight modifications, provided by the teams. And yeah, they make a first roadbook with pacenotes, and on the second run add details to make it as perfect as possible.

About the cars they use, here is an overview:

Usually they have, but for some reason he had to switch to a stock one. No idea, maybe the backup recce car was not near enough or something.
